Novec™ 1230 

Novec 1230 fluid (FK-5-1-12) is a fluorinated ketone that is stored as a liquid and discharged as a gas. It distributes uniformly throughout the hazard zone, suppressing fire primarily by heat absorption from the flame.

Novec 1230 does not fall under the European F-Gas Regulation. At the end of the lifetime of the system, the fluid can be readily recovered and recycled.

By far the largest safety margin for total flooding in occupied spaces of any clean agent currently available.

When space is at a premium, fire extinguishing systems requiring multiple cylinders can present a challenge. 3M™ Novec™ 1230 Fire Protection Fluid is stored as a liquid, whereas inert gases or CO2 are stored as a gas.

This means you need significantly less cylinders to store Novec 1230 fluid, enabling more flexible site selection.

For confined spaces, the cylinders can be installed within the protected area, removing the need for a separate storage room. In the long run Novec 1230 fluid can help save space and associated cost.

Approved for use normally in occupied areas where personnel safety is paramount. It is stored under pressure as a liquid with nitrogen as the propellant gas. The Novec™ 1230 agent is discharged through a piping network into the protected area.

Novec 1230 fluid is a fluorinated ketone with a chemical structure of CF3CF2C(O)CF(CF3)2. The six-carbon molecule of Novec 1230 fluid was chosen, after carefully considering many others, because it provided an ideal balance of performance, toxicological and environmental properties.

Novec 1230 fluid is photolitically sensitive to sunlight. It must be stored away from direct sunlight. This is not expected to be a problem since it is stored in steel or UV resistant plastic containers. When stored in pressurized cylinders, it is obviously kept away from any direct sunlight.

Is Novec 1230 dangerous?

Other toxicity studies conducted have concluded that Novec 1230 fluid is only minimally irritating to the eye, non-irritating to the skin, does not cause skin sensitization, is not mutagenic in the Ames assay and does not cause chromosomal aberrations in CHO cells.

How does Novec 1230 work?
NOVEC 1230 is a synthetic/chemical fire suppression gas and extinguishes a fire by removing the free radicals or heat elements from the fire triangle. (Oxygen, Heat and Fuel). The concentration of Novec 1230 is typically between 5.3% to 5.6% of the room volume.
How big is a Novec 1230 cylinder?
Novec 1230 cylinders come in a vast spectrum of sizes and reange between 5 to 368 litres.  Each cylinder is manufactured from high strength alloy steel and both TPED and DOT are available. 
Is Novec 1230 a halocarbon?

The halocarbon agent FK-5-1-12 (Novec 1230) is the third most widely used clean agent. These clean agents are employed for the protection of sensitive, expensive mission critical assets in applications where traditional sprinklers or other suppression systems are unsuitable.

Why is Novec 1230 referred to as a fluid?

Novec 1230 fluid will have utility in both streaming as well as certain flooding applications. Therefore, it performs both as a gas and a liquid— both of which are, by definition, fluids.
